Obi-Wan Kenobi - WOW!

Commentary

I am so impressed with the new Obi-Wan Kenobi Series on Disney Plus.

Ewan McGregor, Moses Ingram, and Vivien Lyra Blair were absolutely fantastic!

I write this realizing that there are people that eat, breathe, and bleed the Star Wars fandom, I am not that. I am a regular Star Wars fan who wanted to marry Yoda when I was 8 years old, and first saw him on cable in the 80s. It's ok, I also wanted to marry ET. I guess I go for the strong quiet type. Anyway...

It was so refreshing to see the storyline not dominated by male characters. Princess Leia, played by Vivien Lyra Blair, modernized Princess Leia without being destructive to the storyline. It added a whole new layer of value, strength, and context to the character. Carrie Fisher would have embraced this Little Leia. Blair did our beloved character proud!

I loved, loved, loved Moses Ingram playing The 3rd Sister, the primary bad guy! It was awesome to see a female character that got to be mean, determined, goal-oriented, with complexity, and a great backstory. I loved that she owned her badassness! She was great in The Queen's Gambit, and The 3rd Sister role really showcased her talents. Her badassness reminded me of Charlize Theron in Mad Max. Fantastic!

My hope is that Ingram gets to grow this character, and evolve further to do something where we can root for her in the next part of the series. You know because I loved how she was such a great badguy that I had to root against her for 6 whole episodes. I am going to applaud casting for breaking the mold. Smart and Awesome!

Ewan McGregor never disappoints! We loved Old Ben in 1977. He was a wise, loveable, Jedi Mind Tricking Master, that we all wanted to be our own cool mentor. McGregor makes us see why we are going to love that old guy always! McGregor struck just the right balance of firm, gentle, supportive, and kindness when working with Little Leia.

SPOILER:
A huge plot point in the story is when Darth Vader's Helmet breaks, and we can see half black helmet, half destroyed face. Great lighting and cinematography, by the way. But, this interaction between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan set Ben free to now treat Darth Vader as a bad guy only. Anakin is no longer. This moment is a shift that now tracks as a throughline. Nicely, done Joby Harold and Deborah Chow! (Writer and Director).

As a female and a person of color, I have not seen much of myself reflected in Star Wars. Though I have always been a fan. It feels like Disney wants me to be a FAN!

Great job Obi-Wan Kenobi team! I can't wait to see what you do next!
I've got to go rewatch the series.
